Cleary Contracting was the principle building contractor on a new hydrotherapy unit for Roddensvale School in Larne.
The new £950,000 hydrotherapy pool was officially opened by the chairperson of the Education Authority this morning. Sharon O’Connor unveiled a commemorative plaque at the ten metre facility in Larne.
Principal John Madden described the occasion as a “momentous day for the young people of Roddensvale”.
“It is a fabulous day for the school. It has made a difference to provision at Roddensvale.
“The benefits of hydrotherapy are well-documented,” he said.
The pool which is heated to a temperature of 33 degrees centigrade is used predominantly by pupils with mobility issues.
Previously, pupils had to travel to a facility in Jordanstown but they can now enjoy a “much better quality experience”.
The provision was welcomed by Austin Heatley, former chairman of the board of governors who spearheaded a tireless campaign for the pool.
“For many of our pupils, there are obvious benefits of having a warm, weight-bearing environment where physiotherapists can manipulate tight joints and muscles. However this is inevitably diluted somewhat when significant travel to access such a facility off-site is required.
“Now pupils can have their 15 minutes in the hydrotherapy pool without the prospect of a further journey afterwards which may take away from the therapeutic experience and leave them feeling weary.”
EA Chief Executive Gavin Boyd acknowledged the effectiveness of the school’s campaign for the hydrotherapy pool and thanked all of those involved in delivering the project, including Cleary Contracting and the EA’s own team of officials.
Civic Building set to serve the public for many years to come…
“The Civic Building is now on a par with other key council administrative buildings in the borough, which have been significantly enhanced as part of an ongoing modernisation programme.”
Among the many improvements are new double-glazed windows, external doors and ventilation and air-conditioning systems; electrical rewiring of the entire building; an upgrade of the heating system; creation of open plan, smaller offices and new meeting rooms; a new ramp and disabled parking spaces; an upgrade of the IT infrastructure; replacement of all ground floor ceilings; and new audio-visual equipment.
The Civic Building will accommodate some 75 staff working in Building Control, Community Planning, Environmental Health, Environmental Services, Estates and Asset Management and Registration.
The re-opening of the Civic Building has enabled other council buildings in the town to be reviewed.
In the coming weeks, Community Development staff will relocate to the Gate Lodge in Linenhall Street, while a number of support services along with Leisure, Events and Regeneration staff will be based at the Old Technical Building on Downshire Road.

Cleary Contracting carried out refurbishments and new lift installation at the Stormont Buildings under strict rules for the Grade II listed building. The building must continue to function no matter whats happening so reduced noise levels and dust extraction was a major task.

Overview of the Project: Our responsibility as the main contractor on this scheme was to co-ordinate the works throughout parliament buildings, maintaining low noise and dust levels to lessen any disruption to the building users. The building is Grade ll listed, therefore, all works and refurbishments were carried out in a sympathetic manner. This scheme comprised off the fitting of external DDA provisions, the installation of a full 8 person lift, with stone marble and bronze handrail finishes to internal stair wells. Provision of new Rosewood fitted furniture to Post Office and Tourist Information Desk.

Raidió Fáilte’s new headquarters (Líonra Uladh) is a state-of-the-art building boasting the most up to date broadcasting equipment as well as the most amazing views of Belfast.
Cleary Contracting acted as the principle building contractors for the project. The project involved some innovative building techniques for both the design and function of the building.
As a radio station the acoustics of the rooms are of utmost importance. So much so that in the recording studios of the building, no walls are at exact right angles. The technique is used to avoid feedback when recording.
Each recording studio is almost “a room within a room”. The studios have an internal wall and external wall. And internal windows as well as external windows – another design feature to reduce exterior noise.
The site of the new building is at one of Belfast’s busiest junctions, where Divis Street meets the Westlink. The Judges at RICS were impressed by the Raidió Fáilte team’s clear commitment to community engagement and enrichment programmes, facilitated by their new building.
The building appears as a small tower marking this critical point in the city. It is brick externally with gold anodised perforated sliding screens which close the building up at night.
During the day the screens slide to reveal a popular café on the ground floor. Internally the building is surprisingly light filled. The tower is carefully and efficiently planned, adopting clever strategies in order to open up the single stair to the rest of the floors.
Carrickfergus Waterfront is an area of Carrickfergus situated on the north shore of Belfast Lough, which includes two harbour facilities, several restaurants and bars and promenade areas.
The harbour features a 258-metre quay which is a popular area for fishing and short leisurely walks (especially in the case of tourists to the town).
200 metres west of the harbour is Carrickfergus Marina, a purpose-built marina basin opened in 1985.
It provides 300 berths, is professionally supervised and offers individual access to water and electricity. Fuel services are at hand and the complex also provides lifting equipment.
The Marina is located in a hub of activity close to a modern complex accommodating restaurants, a children’s play facility/park, a six-screen cinema, a Sainsburys supermarket, a sailing club and The Windrose – a popular bar/restaurant overlooking the marina.
During 2004/2005 the “Harbour Point” was built in the area between the harbour and marina. The building features a restaurant as well as a bar/lounge on the ground floor and a popular nightclub on the floor above. In the same time period several other establishments were built surrounding the harbour, including Brewer’s Fayre, a family restaurant specialising in seafood, and a Premier Inn.
This project involved the removal of existing pavings, hardcore, mesh, concrete, BWICS for lighting columns, manholes etc. Supply and installation of litter bins, supply and installation of 12 stainlesssteel benches. Bollards, railings, intermediate rails to steps, mechanical and electrical services.
Strengthening and refurbishment 900mts of harbour & sea front wall, works included placement of 100m3 of reinforced concrete & laying of 500m2 of Caithness stone.
The scheme involved the demolition and removal of the gable end of the existing workshop, excavating off-site before forming a new base below existing ground level.
NIR York Road Running Repair Extension
Project Details: Extension of existing 3 number maintenance pits and workshop drainage into new extension; formed new workshop floor as well as the supply and fix of 122 number bolt boxes and uprights to suit new rail track for 3 number maintenance pits for heavy rail maintenance. Erection of steel portal frame and new envelope formed in roof cladding. Installation of new walkways and access stairs within workshop for fitters. External works consisted of diverting all existing site drainage and providing additional parking spaces for staff.
